Early in the book, it is revealed that ten thousand years ago, the demons decided to lift their island out of time, but were sabotaged. In Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony, time travel is not explained very thoroughly, but time seems to have a mind of its own. It is also stated that fairies may choose to enter the time-stop at any time inside of it, but this is never used. This has the added effects that people can be sent into or out of the time-stop thru a gate, anything in the time-stop does not effect anything outside, anyone inside the time-stop cannot fall asleep without sedatives, and anyone that is asleep leaves the time-stop. This causes the time of day inside the bubble to stand still, while everyone inside moves in sync with the world outside. In Artemis Fowl, a 'time-stop' is placed over Fowl manor. Manipulation of time is a main theme of The Lost Colony and The Time Paradox, appears in The Last Guardian and Artemis Fowl Fairies may manipulate time through various means, like Elvin warlocks stopping time or Demon warlocks moving things thru the time streams, and this manipulation has various ramifications across the series.
